Grief and Loss
Research has shown that grief therapy and therapy after a loss can help. There are many types of loss we can experience as humans: death of a loved one, loss of a relationship, job loss, loss of financial security, loss of our identity, loss of purpose, and loss of ability or functioning. Adjusting to a new city, culture, or trying to make new friends can also mean grieving the loss of a life we used to have.
In order to live fully on our journey to wellness, we need to successfully grieve these losses and create new meaning in our lives. However, certain things get in the way of being able to grieve. These “stuck points” can include anger and resentment, guilt, trauma, difficulty or reluctance in talking about the loss, repeating unhealthy patterns in our lives, and assuming we were fully at fault for a loss. For those who have had difficulty grieving a painful loss, or who have experienced multiple losses and feel overwhelmed with where to start, your search for a therapist is a great step.
