Addiction and Substance Use

Many people wonder if they have been drinking or using too much, abusing prescription medication, or using sex in ways that don’t ultimately fulfill them. If you’re worried about your substance use or compulsive sexual behaviors, let’s explore what might be underneath it. Rarely have I found that someone’s use or addiction is the original issue. Addiction to substances (including sex) tends to become the symptom that gets the most attention, but past pain and traumatic experiences are usually the original problem. You may have unresolved grief, trauma, difficulties standing up for yourself, shame and guilt, or difficulties controlling your anger. I often find that misuse of substances or sex is accompanied by underlying emotional pain that requires an integrative approach to treatment.

The good news is that substance use and misuse of sex are treatable and therapy can help. There is no “one size fits all” treatment approach when it comes to treating substance misuse or unwanted sexual behaviors, so let’s work together to determine what will best help you live the life you want. Please note: I will not offer any services that attempt to change someone’s sexual orientation in any way. Sexual orientation change efforts (SOCE) have been demonstrated to be unethical and harmful to those receiving such services. My practice is inclusive of all sexual orientations, gender identities, kinks, fetishes, and sexual behaviors that do not harm others who cannot consent. The kinds of unwanted sexual behaviors I can help clients with include misuse of pornography and compulsive or risky sex.
