Psychological Testing

If you have been referred for psychological testing (sometimes called psychological evaluation or psychological assessment), I am happy to help. Most clients are referred by another health provider, but some clients are simply curious to learn more about themselves through testing. The most common referral question asks if the client has a mental health diagnosis or substance use disorder and, if so, what are the recommendations for treatment?

What is the process for psychological testing?

Once referred for testing and with your permission, I may consult with the referring provider to obtain more background information. I will then send you some preliminary questionnaires through the secure online client portal and we would schedule you for an in-person evaluation (roughly 60-90 minutes). Psychological testing often involves a longer and more thorough first meeting than a standard therapy intake session. This is because I will gather most of your relevant history in that meeting and I will have specific questions pertaining to the referral question. I may also have additional tests for you to complete during that time. If indicated, we may decide to schedule another session to complete the testing.

After testing is complete and I have sufficient information to properly answer the referral question, I then write the psychological evaluation report. This report is unique to you, your history, and your results. It takes time and careful thought to complete, but I ensure that my clients obtain their results within 1 to 7 calendar days, depending on the complexity of the case and time constraints. Rush services are available for an additional fee. In the end, you will have a comprehensive and quality report that thoroughly answers the referral question and makes concrete, specific recommendations for you based on your history and results.

The final step involves an in-person explanation of the results and an overview of the testing report (which will be several pages and have many sections to it). I answer any questions you have about your results or my recommendations, and will provide you with a copy. Finally, I then send the report to your referral source and consult with them if needed.
